Africa - The board game
From Nelson Mandela to Muammar Gaddafi, national leaders have long dreamt of a united Africa. Now, the developers of a new board game are promising to help realise that vision.
Scattered about are 25 small squares, each of which covers a little piece of Africa.

Players use a dice and banknotes in the traditional African currency of the cowry, and they have to answer questions on the challenges facing Africa, or on Africa's history.
An example: "Which African country used to be called Dahomey?"
The answer, for those who could not guess, is Benin.
As they answer the questions, the players gradually fit the map of Africa back together.
This is Jekaben, a board game designed by committed pan-African Salif Tidiane Ba.

"The aim is to make the African youth be aware of the need to work closely together and to quickly achieve the United States of Africa," he says.  Although he concedes it is a huge challenge which many leaders have failed to meet, he is confident it can become a reality.
As well as answering questions about the continent, players of the game can also grab some of the new opportunities offered to the continent, such as mining concessions. And they can collect trump cards - from a pack entitled "Wise leaders of Africa".
The statesmen - including Col Gaddafi, Mr Mandela and Senegal's Abdoulaye Wade - are regarded by Mr Ba as symbols of pan-Africanism.

"Their cards are used as trump cards, they allow the player to move faster towards the United States of Africa," he says. But he is aware that not all of his "wise leaders" will meet with universal approval.
Included in the pack is Nigeria's Olusegun Obasanjo, a former military strongman.

The late Omar Bongo of Gabon, who was accused of massive embezzlement of his country's oil wealth during four decades in power, is also featured. And Ghana's Kwame Nkrumah, who was overthrown in a coup after his rule descended into authoritarianism, also gets a card of his own.

Ronaldo Set To Become The First Soccer Billionaire

Real Madrid midfielder Cristiano
Ronaldo is set to become football's first billionaire, earning an incredible £16,000 a minute.

The former Manchester United ace is to be offered a staggering £1.5 million a game to take part in a series of friendlies in the Middle East, according to a report in the Daily Star.

That would see the current world footballer of the year take over from David Beckham as the planet's richest player and send him on his way to becoming the game's first billionaire.

Real are considering a tour of the Middle East with oil barons are prepared to shell out megabucks to lure the Spanish club - and main attraction Ronaldo - to Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

Real will be offered £3m per game for the tour during Spain's annual winter break, with that amount to be split 50-50 with Ronaldo to ensure the Portuguese is included in the trip.

A source told the Daily Star: "Real Madrid are the team of the moment and Ronaldo is the player everyone wants to see.

"He is the key to the deal. These wealthy businessmen are willing to break the bank to get him to play at their local stadium. Money really isn't an obstacle for these people.

"Real can virtually name their price if they include Ronaldo in the squad."

Ronaldo, bought by Real for £80m in the summer, already earns £12m a year at the Bernabeu, while pocketing a small fortune from a number of endorsement deals and his three clothing boutiques.

Would you give up your car for a bicycle?

Workers in Lagos, Nigeria are finding themselves in a jam.

They are having to spend up to six hours queuing for fuel for their cars; and even when they do get fuel, they can spend all day going no where thanks to gridlocked traffic.

Cars may be a status symbol, but are they actually serving us well? Given the economic downturn and environmental issues such as climate change and pollution, is it time for bicycles to make a return?

Are bicycles a viable option in our towns and cities? Would you consider riding a bike to work or do you think it is only for a certain class of people? In Japan, China, South Korea, Bicycle has no class.

Chimamanda's Book Picked For A Hollywood Movie

I was amazed to see Half Of The Yellow Sun picked for Hollywood movie. The movie is expected to be out in 2011. With the rich content of the novel, I see another Slumdog Millionaire in making. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s award winning novel, Half Of A Yellow Sun, has been picked up to become a film with the production team behind “The Last King of Scotland”, reports Jamati. (FINALLY!)

It’s always great to see Nigerian literature being picked up by the mass media. I’m definitely looking forward to this film from the outcome to the film production’s actor picks…and hopefully you are too excited about this tidbit. Half Of A Yellow Sun won a Orange Prize for Fiction in 2007 and the young British-American author was named by ESSENCE as a honorable African.

About Half of A Yellow Sun:
Half of a Yellow Sun is set in Nigeria during the 1960s, at a time of the vicious Nigeria- Biafra war in which more than a million people died and thousands were massacred in cold blood.

Three characters are swept up in the rapidly unfolding political events. Ugwu, a boy from a poor village, is employed as a houseboy for a university lecturer. Olanna, a young, middle-class woman, has come to live with the professor, abandoning her privileged life in Lagos for a dusty university town and the charismatic idealism of her new lover. Richard is a tall, shy Englishman, in thrall to Olanna’s twin sister Kainene, who refuses to belong to anyone.

They are propelled into events that will pull them apart and bring them together in the most unexpected ways. As Nigerian troops advance and they run for their lives, their ideals – and their loyalties to each other – are severely tested. This novel is about Africa, about moral responsibility, the end of colonialism, ethnic allegiances, class and race, and about how love can complicate all these things.

Chimamanda Adichie: The danger of a single story

I was moved by this video. Chimamanda is a woman I respect so much. She inspires me and motivates me to reach my goals.

Our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice -- and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding.

SA man's mass wedding 'saved money' - BBC

South African businessman Milton Mbele broke all the traditional rules of a polygamous wedding when he recently married four women on the same day.
The four brides dressed in flowing white gowns walked down the aisle together, before saying "We do" to the 44-year-old groom. Mr Mbele says he didn't marry them purely for the spectacle but also because it made financial sense.

"I don't know how much four different weddings would have cost me but I know doing it all at once saved money," he explains. "For example I only needed one tent, I needed to hire one caterer and one photographer for the entire ceremony."

"I began putting money aside for the event towards the end of 2007 and started collecting quotes for things like the tent and catering costs early last year." He says he loves all his wives - Thobile Vilakazi, Zanele Langa, Baqinisile Mdlolo and Smangele Cele - equally and also treats them that way. Mr Mbele himself wears four rings on his finger - he says this is a sign of his commitment to all his wives.

The wives say they were shocked by the news that Mr Mbele wanted to marry them at once but add that they agreed because they love him. Some two weeks after their much publicised two-day ceremony, Mr Mbele says he is overwhelmed by all the attention his wedding has attracted. I met Mr Mbele and Smangele, at 23 the youngest Mrs Mbele, at a hotel in Durban In a polygamous marriage only the first wife is legally recognised, which could pose some difficulties in dividing the husband's estate when he dies.

South Africa has the highest number of HIV-positive people in the world - some five million. Since having more than one sexual partner increases the chances of contracting the virus, it is understandable that Smangele's family had reservations about her entering into a polygamous marriage.
"My family was not pleased at first but they came around eventually," she says.
They are taking the necessary precautions, which include regular HIV tests.
"I had my last test a few months ago when I was pregnant... We are all disciplined about staying healthy," she says.
