Nigeria protest over senator's child bride

Ahmad Rufai Sani (Photo from Nigerian Senate website
www.nassnig.org/senate)

I read about this marriage some weeks ago and I have been waiting for human rights groups to take action. Marriage of this kind has to stop in this modern world. Childhood is a stage in life that must not be deprived from any kid.

Nigerian Women Rights Groups protest this act:
Women's groups in Nigeria are threatening to take legal action against a senator, following reports he married a 13-year-old Egyptian girl.

Ahmad Sani Yerima, 49, is reported to have married her at the national mosque in Abuja several weeks ago.
Female senators have promised to table for debate a petition from the groups calling for Mr Sani to be reprimanded.

The women's rights groups believe Mr Sani has broken the law, pointing to the Child Rights Act of 2003.
"When you marry them out at this early stage, is it because it is viewed as a commodity that can be easily disposed of and a new one acquired," Nigeria's Punch newspaper quotes Mma Wokocha, the leader of the coalition protesting about the marriage.

Newspaper reports have also accused him of having previously married a 15-year-old girl in 2006. BBC

Nomination for Seven Wonders of Nigeria begins

picture: Nigeria's Jos Rock located in Jos, Plateau State

Akwaaba Travel Quarterly, an in-flight journal of Nigerian Eagle Airline is spearheading the search for the seven wonders of Nigeria as its own contribution to the growth of tourism and the development of national pride, a statement by the firm has said.
In 2007, during the search for the new Seven Wonders of the World in which ATQ participated, it tried to do a search in Nigeria but had to call it off for logistic reasons.
However, the firm said that as Nigeria marks its 50th anniversary, the need to renew national pride and develop a communal love for our country had made the project mandatory.
The statement partly read, ”There is a need to build up a body of locations that are ”must see” for every Nigerian and every visitor and images that can be universally recognized and promoted as Nigerian destinations. This will draw attention to the beauty of Nigeria and its people. We are borrowing from the Greek writers of yore to launch the 7 wonders of Nigeria.”
”The search for these 7 wonders will excite the nation as every one will be interested in the results, and will deliver dividends to the sites. It will unlock the opportunity for Nigeria, and the sites, to look good, feel good and create good.
A list of the initial 50 members has been released and as the project progresses more experts are to join the team. It is expected that with the national spread of the Committee members they will gather information from sites near them and furnish the project with these sites. Nominations can be made through the website www.africantravelquarterly.com of ATQ magazine from the 20th of April or through members.

A Tour Of Cross Rivers - The People's Paradise

I found this video very interesting. Cross Rivers state is blessed in tourist locations and historical sites. If Nigerians can follow the culture of traveling within the country for tourism, then Cross Rivers will be an interesting and informative place to visit. I hope they attract more than expected foreign tourist into the country. There is always a thrilling adventure awaiting the tourist visiting Cross River State, from the soaring plateaus of the mountain tops of Obudu, to the Rain forests of Afi, from the waterfalls of Agbokim and Kwa, to the spiralling ox-bow Calabar River, which provides sights and images of the Tinapa Business Resort, Calabar Marina, Calabar Residency Museum and the Calabar Slave Park along its course.

Welcome to Lagos - BBC Documentary

It is extraordinary, though, as is this documentary, Welcome to Lagos (BBC2), which zooms in on a handful of those 16 million. Bottom of the pile, literally, are the scavengers at the Olusosun rubbish dump, human vultures who pick through the stinking detritus with metal claws, looking for stuff that can be recycled and sold: tins, plastic, copper wire, rubber, clothes, anything. In the dry season, fires often break out, adding toxic smoke and mortal danger to a day's work. And in the rainy season, the place turns into a slimy netherworld.

Rapper DaGrin is Dead

Olaitan Oladapo a.k.a  DaGrin
This is so so saddening. It has been confirmed that the young, talented, Yoruba rap artist, Dagrin, past on some few hours ago. I don’t even know what more to write about this, I didn’t expect death. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

DaGrin’s exceptional performance registered into people consciousness. Music producers, marketers, and record label knew that Dagrin has something inside of him that was special and distinct.

The Rap artiste who was nominated for the 2010 Hiphop World awards to take place in May was on his way from a friends place when he drove into a stationery truck.
I don't know who to blame for his death; was it the tragic car accident or Nigeria need to upgrade its health system.

Rest in Peace Da Grin.

Kenny Keke Ogungbe cheated me and Kelly Handsome

This video came across us and I was wowed by what I heard. Now we're not sure how true what this guy is saying is, but given recent fall out between Kelly Handsome and Kennis Music, and also 2face fall out with Kennis Music a few years back, one has to at least listen to what this Director is saying. Very interesting stuff. Not sure what is going on, but everyone has their side of a story. Check it out. Below is from the Adam Jones, the video director.

"Kenny of Kennis Music and Primetime Africa fame, only paid me half of my directing fee. He took the footage for two Kelly Hansome videos and handed it to an editor without my involvement and directing notes. The videos turned out poorly. They were not what I intended, nor was the editing up to my standards. Kenny's actions are the equivalent of agreeing to a payment, paying half, waiting for it to be done, and disappearing. Put simply, Kenny stole my labor."

BEYONCE GETS $2M . . . TO SING AT ADENUGA'S WEDDING!!!

I blogged some weeks ago about Beyonce performing at Chief Adenuga's daughter's wedding. I just read on MediaTakeOut.com that Beyonce Knowles was paid $2M . . . to sing at the wedding of Nigeria's richest man's daughter.

Young people are not capable of leading this country - IBB

Babangida, in a Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation interview which was published on Sunday, had stated that his intention to contest the 2011 presidential election was necessitated by his observed dearth of younger Nigerians with the right leadership qualities.

Responding to a question on why he was not interested in younger politicians ruling the country, Babangida had responded thus, Because we have seen signs that they are not capable of leading this country and so, we feel we should help them. May be they are not given the proper education, that is why. I have spent 17 years since I left office... But a country like Nigeria cannot be ruled by people without experience. People like Obama that you are speaking about have the experience.”

I think Nigerian youths should demand an apology from IBB. If younger politicians can't rule Nigeria, so he is the one capable of doing something. It's like the self acclaimed 'evil genius' had forgotten he ruled Nigeria for 8 years and he didn't do anything outstanding! He should watch his statement before he loses votes from millions of youths in the next coming Election.

A journey back to the roots: “Ijinle” by WeWe Clothing

Click for Full Image SizeBy Dayo Adepoju

WeWe Clothing glams the kids with its new collection “Ijinle” . The delightful collection consists of the cute, trendy pieces in patterns that are easily identifiable with children, making the collection fun, playful and reflective of the cheerful spirit of curious kids!

Designer, Folake Kuye Huntoon, talks more about the “Ijinle” collection:

Collection

“Ijinle” in the Yoruba language means “the roots”, “authentic”, “ancestors”, so many significant and powerful meanings that represent my vision for this collection and for WeWe Clothingas a company. I tend to be really raw and above all, take pride in being an Ibadan girl. For the first time, my husband, 3 kids and beautiful niece visited Ibadan in Nigeria and it was an organic experience. Obviously, it was a bonding one too, it was the first time my family had a chance to see me in true cultural context. The inspiration just came pouring, and as I was there to enjoy and have a good time with my family, I was also taking notes and sketching my next collection for WeWe. It shaped my direction. I knew I had to not only re-focus, but re-brand as well.

Fabric

I chose to use all Ankara fabrics for this collection. In the past, I have mixed Ankara with western fabrics, lace or aso-oke even. This time, I didn’t want to mix. I just wanted to dedicate this to Ibadan, my homeland. Both my parents are from there, and we all re-united in the same city where it all began and where they met. I observed that on the streets or just in general, everyone (adults & kids) had on Ankara with different beautiful designs, patterns and colours.

The Future

Well, we are really happy with the brand right now.We want to get better with every collection, we want to expand our sizes too because right now, we stop at size 5/6. Also, we are working on global expansion and on several non-profit projects. One of them is with American Red Cross of Los Angeles for the people of Haiti, and another is a sickle cell foundation, in which we are trying to focus on Nigeria; orphans with sickle cell disease, and kids with sickle cell in general. We have a lot going on, it’s an exciting time.
