Nigeria population: Three-baby Family Plan

Photo from BBC website

A Nigerian family planning expert has told the BBC it would be difficult to implement the suggestion that Nigerians should only have three children.
Isaac Ogo pointed to the tradition of polygamy and the belief that the children were seen as a "gift from God" in a male-dominated society. Recent UN figures suggest Nigeria's population could jump to 730 million by 2100 - behind only India and China.
On the streets of the northern city of Kaduna, some people told the BBC that God decided how many children they had and so it would be wrong to try to limit the number of births. "[The UN] should try to advise the government how to make the lives of Nigerians better, not telling Nigerians not to have children - that is not their business," one angry woman said.
But one woman agreed  that in a poor country such as Nigeria, it was better to have fewer children and look after them properly. Nigeria's population is currently 160m - by far the most populous in Africa but a long way behind those of China and India.

95-year-old woman gets the horn

A 95 year old woman from Zhanjiang, south China, has sprouted a 12 centimetre long horn on her forehead.

The horn first grew in 2003 and has grown progressively bigger and bigger, taking over the poor woman's face. Doctors are baffled by the protrusion - and can only speculate that Xiou Ling is suffering a hormone imbalance.

Her family are currently saving up for treatment to remove it.

Give alms to beggars, go to jail -Lagos

The Lagos State Government on Thursday said giving alms to beggars on roadside is an offence punishable by two years imprisonment without an option of fine.

It further stated that instead of risking jail term, the citizens of the state could give such alms to churches, mosques, registered orphanages, motherless babies homes or social welfare institutions in the state.

"Lagos State frowns on giving alms to beggars. It is punishable under the law and you can get up to two years imprisonment for giving money to beggars. We have places where such money could be put to good use. The government is committed to best practices in social care," The Special Adviser on Youth, Sports and Social Development to the governor, Dr. Dolapo Badru.

North-Of-Lagos - Please Visit this blog!

Welcome to North of Lagos–a blog about living, studying and pursuing journalism in Nigeria. My name is Cara Harshman, but in Nigeria I go by Títílayò, my Yorùbá name.

I am a 22-year-old senior at University of Wisconsin-Madison and will be living in Ibadan, Nigeria–a city a couple hours north of metropolitan Lagos and 7 degrees north of the equator. I am leaving for Ibadan on September 8th, for a year to study the Yorùbá language, which I have been learning at UW for the past three years.

People always ask me why I chose to study Yorùbá out of all the languages. Why not Chinese or Arabic? The answer is multifaceted. Junior year of high school I traveled to Angola with a non-for-profit organization called RISE International, whose mission is to build schools and provide teacher training to rural villages.

Traveling around Angola for a month with a group of 20 adults and a few students doing teacher training workshops twisted my world view and implanted me with a desire to return to Africa one day. I also realized I naturally picked up on Umbundu, the local language, pretty well. When I found myself signing up for classes at UW I was perplexed at what I wanted to study.

An adviser told me about a program for first semester freshman that pre-schedules three interrelated classes with one small group of students–the idea is to make the transition from high school to college easier. They offered one called “The African Cultural Expedition” that really got my attention. I decided to forgo the intro psychology, political science and literature courses to take a Yoruba language class and a Yoruba culture class, knowing I would do something with the skills in the future.

Is this Lil Genevieve?

This photo is floating around the internet...

Genevieve and hmm-- not sure oh!
According to Linda Ikeji's Blog, that is not Genevieve's daughter. The pic has been circulating all over BB, Twitter, Facebook and blogs, with the caption, Genevieve Nnaji and daughter. Genevieve has a teenage daughter, but that is not her. The lady in the pic is a model. I guess the story started because of the resemblance...but she's no kin of hers. You know some people start a story as a joke and before you know it, it spreads like wildfire. The actress would never expose her teenage child like this...at a party, long weave, boobs on display, carrying a wine glass...common guys...:-)

anywayz they are both beautiful!

Where’s Hillary?

Hillary Clinton's expression, right hand clasped over her mouth in astonishment, is largely responsible for making the above photo iconic--and, to at least one newspaper, sexually suggestive.

Turns out she was probably just coughing during that crucial moment captured by White House photographer Pete Souza

"In accord with our religious beliefs, we do not publish photos of women, which in no way relegates them to a lower status... Because of laws of modesty, we are not allowed to publish pictures of women, and we regret if this gives an impression of disparaging to women, which is certainly never our intention. We apologize if this was seen as offensive." The editors of Der Tzitung have apologized to the White House for altering the photo.

UDARA/AGBALUMO - a favourite fruit

Remember this friut - 'Agbalumo'.
Definitely one of my all time favourite fruits when I was growing up in Lagos. And the seeds were collected and used for playing in all sorts of local games.

The movie: Hunt for Osama bin Laden

A film about the hunt for Osama bin Laden could be on its way to the big screen, according to reports.
The Oscar-winning director of The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow, has been planning a movie about the US special forces team that killed theal-Qaida leader for some time, Variety (paywall) says. The film was thought to focus on a previous unsuccessful attempt to get Bin Laden, but as the project – tentatively titled Kill Bin Laden – is still in development, screenwriter Mark Boal could easily include details of the40-minute firefight at a compound in Pakistan which led to Bin Laden's death.
