Stolen Benin Empire's Mask To Be Auctioned In London For N1.25b

Stolen Benin City mask to be auctioned in London for N1.25b-A 16th-century ivory pendant mask, one of the last great masterpieces of Benin City sculpture remaining in private hands, but believed to have been stolen by British colonialists  is to be offered for sale at Sotheby’s London.

The mask, to be auctioned in February next year with an estimate of £5 million (N1.25 billion), is thought to have been worn by the then Oba of Benin city on ceremonial occasions. Only four other ivory masks of this age and quality are known, all of which are in museums.

Standing at 22cm high, the mask is being sold by the descendants of one Lieutenant Colonel Sir Henry Lionel Gallwey, deputy commissioner and vice-consul in the Oil Rivers Protectorate in 1891, who took part in the infamous Punitive Expedition of 1897 in what is now southern Nigeria.

In response to the massacre of a previous British-led invasion force, naval and protectorate troops deposed the king and captured, looted and burnt the city of Benin.

'Nigerian Virgin Girls' Gives Awards To Virgins

Nigerian Virgin Girls, an association dedicated to promoting virtue among young ladies, celebrated 65 girls who have decided to abstain from sexual intercourse with the opposite gender, last Saturday.

The young ladies, aged 16 and above, were presented with Virtuous Awards after being examined and confirmed virgins by a medical doctor. They also participated in beauty pageant tagged ‘Miss Virginity 2010.’ According to Adunni Adediran, founder of the association, the need to reduce promiscuity and other vices like abortion and sexually-transmitted diseases was responsible for setting up the association four years ago.

“We started this in order to reduce promiscuity, and all of the vices that send our children to early graves such as abortion, sex before marriage that cause diseases of all sorts and insanity that could be brought about by disappointment,” said Ms. Adediran.

Ex-Militant on Nigerian Idol Auditions

For 21yr old ex-militant Daniel Agagha aka *Zion Master*, music is the better weapon he has picked up to combat the ills in his immediate society. He is currently in the amnesty program run aimed at the rehabilitation of more than 10,000 militants in the region. The government initiated the program in order to find solutions to the problems citizens face in the Niger Delta. Daniel's style of music, Reggae, is quite different from what Nigerian Idol and its producers are looking for, notwithstanding, he has got talent and passion for the music he does -- and found a place where he can be at peace with himself and his environment.

A Nigerian Student Shot And Killed In US

At only 21, Olubusayo Awomolo was so focused on obtaining his master's degree in mechanical engineering that he hardly did anything besides go to class and study, his father said.

His quiet life and single-minded devotion to school made it all the more difficult for his family to comprehend how Awomolo could be gunned down Monday evening in the driveway of their Dolton home.

"My son is gone," said Wale Awomolo, as he stood surrounded by friends and family Tuesday in their south suburban home. "He was a very, very, very quiet boy. I'm hoping the police will be able to tell me why."

Olubusayo Awomolo was a master's degree candidate at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he also received his bachelor's degree, officials there confirmed.

Nigeria to hold presidential election on 9 April

Atiku Abubakar is one of the candidates seeking the governing party's nomination
I am surprise to see former Nigerian Vice President, Atiku still up in becoming the president of Nigeria. At this time in the world, countries are full of pride, trying to show they are becoming better. I wonder if Nigeria do have that dreams, or if the presidential aspirants do have the dream of making Nigeria one of the greatest countries in the world. All I will say is that, may the best candidate win. whoever it may be, abeg make better come to our country naija!

Officials in Nigeria have said the country will hold a presidential election on 9 April next year, ending months of uncertainty. The poll had originally been scheduled for January, but was postponed after parliament approved constitutional changes. Officials said the delay was needed so they could amend the voters' roll, which they described as deeply flawed.

"BLACK GOLD" New Nollywood Hit By Jeta Amata Starring Sarah Wayne Callies of Prison Break

At first it was AMAZING GRACE, now it's BLACK GOLD featuring Hollywood stars like Billy Zane (TITANIC) etc. I strongly believe more Nollywood producers and directors should emulate Jeta Amata. This guy has got some stuffs upstairs.

From award winning director, Jeta Amata, comes Black Gold, a powerful story of greed, murder and corruption in the murky waters of the volatile oil rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Black Gold is an epic film about environmental justice and the fight over the control of the scarce oil resources that the world runs on. The line between good and evil is blurred as corrupt government officials, greedy oil companies and violent rebels go on a war path over oil spills and degradation of the land caused by oil exploration. Starring Billy Zane, Mbong Amata, Hakeem Kae Kazim and Sarah Wayne Callies. Produced by Jeta Amata, Wilson Ebiye, Dede Mabiaku and Hakeem Kae Kazim. Original score and trailer by Joel Goffin.

Akunyili Condemns Use of ‘Naija’ in Place of Nigeria

The Federal Government has condemned in strong terms the use of “Naija” in place of Nigeria, saying that such usage is “very uncharitable and unpatriotic”.

Minister of Information and Communication, Prof. Dora Akunyili, made the remarks while receiving the participants of Heir Apparent Reality Show in her office in Abuja yesterday.

Akunyili, who frowned on the continuous misrepresentation of the country's official name in place of a “corrupt” version, said: "It is very offensive to call Nigeria ‘Naija’. We are making plans to write companies to stop using the word Naija. I have heard that name Naija in adverts. I want them to go back and remove that word.

"If anybody says this is Naija, ask the person, 'Where is Naija?' We have to stop this word because it is catching up with the young. If we don't put a stop to its usage now, it will continue to project us wrongly.”

The minister's condemnation was prompted by a sentence in the presentation of the visiting group where “our world is Naija” was inserted.

I see nothing wrong in the name naija. I so much love NAIJA. When naija is used we have these feelings of being more patriotic.. abi I lie?

Exclusive pictures of P-Square's N500m mansion

"Getting a land in Omole Estate (Ikeja, Lagos) alone is N100m. When you look at the house, especially the finishing, it is over $2million. When people speculated that the house was worth N300 million, we had not even finished the interior. What do you think is the cost of a mansion that has a swimming pool, six living rooms, ten master bedrooms, all fully furnished? It's far more than the speculated N300million"

Viewpoint (Nigeria @ 50): What it means to be Nigerian

Why are we Nigerians not vociferously proud of our nationality?
I suppose patriotism is not the sort of thing that excites a lot of us. In fact any talk of patriotism is likely to induce a yawn or suspicion about the motive of the person raising it.
But that is not the same as saying that Nigerians have no sense of pride.
To understand patriotism's uneasy place in Nigeria, you have to go back to 1914 when the Southern and Northern protectorates and Lagos Colony were brought together to form a single country.
But I am always proud as a Nigerian when at a gathering, everyone joins in rendering the national anthem without the aid of a recording. And when you go abroad you can always tell the Nigerian from other Africans judging by his self-confident, some would say cocky, way.
The biggest mistake a non-Nigerian can make is to try to criticise the country or to even innocently join the Nigerian pastime of self-condemnation. That is when you see that, in spite of all the negativity, Nigerians care for their country and still believe that one day its much talked about potential will be realised.
