Government to register unemployed Nigerians

The federal government has concluded plans to develop adatabase of all unemployed persons in Nigeria, the minister of labour and productivity, Chukwuemeka Wogu has said.

The minister said registering the unemployed in the country is necessary because nobody knows the number of Nigerians that are unemployed and planning activity has been based on extrapolation. He said that when this is completed, employers will have easy access to labour while the platform will be very useful for all activities in economic planning.

Father impregnates 12-year-old daughter

Ben Philip

How will 12-year-old Joy (not real name) explain to her child that his father also doubles as his grandfather? Joy is about four months pregnant and her father is responsible for the pregnancy.

Her father, Ben Philip, 37, an indigene of Itam, Cross River State, did not deny the incest. But he accused his daughter of seducing him and contested that Joy was 15 and not 12 as she claimed, adding that they only had sex twice.

Philip told PUNCH METRO, ”By the way, she is not 12 years, but 15 years. The first time it happened, she was the one that came to me naked on the bed. I beat her and told her to go away, she came back and pushed herself on me and I am a man."

Joy said, ”I am 12 years plus. The first time he did it with me, he came to the second room I was sharing with my twin brothers and said I should come and fan him. He gave me something that contained alcohol and I slept off after fanning him for a while. The second day I was very weak when I woke up. I later knew that he did it with me while I was sleeping.

”Since then, he has been having sex with me and I can‘t count how many times we have done it. We did it many times. Anytime he wanted to have sex with me, he would force me to drink something that contained alcohol"

Mba, a Superintendent of Police, said that a teacher in a private school where Joy attended in Ikorodu, an outskirt of Lagos State, had noticed the primary six pupil pregnant

New Film On Fela: Ejiofor Takes Lead Role, As D’banj Fails

STAR singer Dapo Oyebanjo (a.k.a D’ Banj), has failed to meet the role of Fela in a Broadway musical audition for a movie, which chronicles the life and times of afro-beat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, who was born (Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti).

Titled: Fela: The Life and Times of an African Musical Icon, the organisers said D’ Banj was part of the audition in New York a few weeks ago, but opted for Hollywood actor, Chiwetel Ejiofor as the best artiste for the role of Fela in the biopic about the legendary musician and activist.

Ejiofor is an award-winning U.K-based Nigerian professional artiste, whose impressive profile in the movie industry arguably gave him an edge for the role. Ejiofor was in 2001 nominated for a Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for the 2000 season, for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Blue and Orange at the Royal National Theatre, Cottesloe stage.

Chris Brown denied entry to the UK

Chris Brown Chris Brown was also sentenced to five years' probation
I just read on BBC that US singer Chris Brown has been forced to postpone his UK tour after being denied a visa to enter the country.

Brown was refused permission on the grounds of being guilty of a serious criminal offence, the Home Office said. He was sentenced to a community service order for assaulting his ex-girlfriend, singer Rihanna, last February.

Brown had posted on his Twitter feed that he had been denied entry to the UK, but the entries were subsequently removed.

In a statement, the Home Office said: "We reserve the right to refuse entry to the UK to anyone guilty of a serious criminal offence. Public safety is one of our primary concerns.
"Each application to enter the UK is considered on its individual merits," it added.

Kingmakers set to depose Akure monarch

In the past days, news circulated about the Deji of Akure who publicly had a street fight with one of his wives. I have read lots of criticisms regarding the Deji of Akure and Kings have to understand they are not above the law too.

Palpable tension enveloped Akure, the Ondo State capital on Friday, as traditional kingmakers confirmed that they had begun the process that would lead to the dethronement of the Deji, Oba Oluwadare Adeshina, who allegedly engaged in a street fight with his estranged wife, Queen Bolanle, last Sunday.

No fewer than 10 police patrol vehicles were sighted moving around major streets in the town while about four others were stationed around the Deji‘s palace to forestall possible breakdown of law and order.

US couple jailed for enslaving Nigerian

A United States federal judge on Friday sentenced a Texas couple for forcing a widowed Nigerian mother of six to serve in domestic servitude, holding her as a slave for over eight years.

Justice John McBryde sentenced Emmanuel Nnaji, a naturalised U.S. citizen, to 20 years in prison. His 40-year-old wife, Ngozi, a Nigerian citizen, was sentenced to nine years behind bars. The couple was also ordered to pay $305,957.60 in restitution.

Prosecutors said the victim was recruited in Nigeria and lured to the U.S. with promises she would receive a salary and child support. In the end, she only received about $300 for her years of work.

Court documents also showed that Emmanuel Nnaji, 50, sexually assaulted the victim and that the couple refused to grant her request to return to Nigeria. A Catholic priest eventually rescued her from the ordeal.

Nuhu Ribadu Returns To Nigeria

Nuhu Ribadu, former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has, this evening, arrived in Nigeria after spending about two years abroad.

Mr. Ribadu, who was received by his wife and three children at the departure terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, was closely guarded out of the hall by his security officers who refused to allow journalists to conduct any interviews.

The former anti crime boss arrived at the airport at about 4:40pm from the United States of America in a Delta airlines flight and left in a Mercedes Benz.

Recently, the Police Service Commission, the arm of the Nigerian Police with the powers to employ, post, and discipline senior police officers, restored Mr. Ribadu’s former rank of Assistant Inspector General, retired.

A reliable source said Mr. Ribadu will on Sunday receive a doctorate degree at Babcock University, Ogun State.

Couple Uses Six-year-old Twins To Smuggle Cocaine

The length at which some people have been driven to because of money is truly sad. A couple who attempted to traffic cocaine out of the country using their six-year old twins, have been apprehended.

Announcing the arrest of the duo - Jimoh Bashir and Jimoh Milikat - at the weekend, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) disclosed that the couple will be charged for child abuse and drug trafficking, as it described the act by the parents as a complete show of contempt on the rights of their children.

Mitchell Ofoyeju, spokesperson for the agency, disclosed that Mr. Bashir allegedly connived with his wife to conceal 350g of cocaine each on the diaper of their twins on their way to London.

“Both parents and their kids were apprehended as they were about boarding an Arik Air flight to London, and the wife concealed 3.35kg on her body with some on her bra and some in her underwear,” he said.

“The innocent six-year old twins were also used in packing 700g of illicit drugs, which brought the total quantity of cocaine to 4.05kg.”

The Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) commander of the agency, Hamza Umar, revealed that investigations into the case is currently at an advanced stage and that other accomplices shall be made to face the wrath of the law.

Mr. Umar disclosed that the couple, who runs a superstore in one of the highbrow areas in Lagos, Ajah, got involved in drug peddling after being duped the sum of N2.2 million.

According to the agency’s airport commander, times became tough for the duo as they had to smuggle drugs to pay school fees for their kids.

The father of the family, Mr. Bashir, in his statement disclosed that they were to be paid 3,000 pounds by their contractors, adding that he was swayed by his wife to commit the crime.
