The Gorilla who walks around on two legs

It's a known fact that gorillas share close to 95% of their DNA with humans. But it seems Ambam the Silverback may have found the other five - as he swaggers around his enclosure like a man. The 18-second clip, shot at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in Kent, shows the hulking ape walking upright on his hind legs, and has become an internet sensation. - Daily Mail UK

Tobechi Onwuhara (right) at a Dallas nightclub with Ezenwa Onyedebelu.
"I was taught by my dad not to be a follower," Onwuhara once said.

A luxury suite at the W Hotel in Dallas is as good a place as any to conquer the world. At least it seemed that way in 2007 when Tobechi Onwuhara got the crew together. They'd meet there often, seven or eight of them. Some had nicknames from the Ian Fleming lexicon: C, Q, and E. Others were called Mookie, Orji, Uche. They would spread out on designer sofas and at the wet bar, open three-ring binders, and fire up laptops with hard-to-trace wireless cards. On a nearby table there'd be prepaid cellphones with area codes taped to them. A phone for Southern California. A phone for Northern Virginia. A phone for any place Onwuhara had found the "good money."

Nigeria's president told to reduce ministries

President Goodluck Jonathan thanked the panel for the report

Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan has been told by a key advisory panel to cut government's running costs.
The chair of the Presidential Advisory Council, Theophilus Danjuma, said ministries should be cut or merged to free money for development schemes. The budget proposed for 2011 shows Nigeria would spend far more on the government than on infrastructure.
Nigeria is Africa's leading oil producer, but the majority of its 150 million people still live in poverty. Parliamentarians' salaries are not made public in Nigeria, but diplomats say the country's politicians are among the best paid in the world.

First lady wows at State Dinner

Dressed in a red petal print silk organza gown by Alexander McQueen, Michelle Obama stopped high-profile traffic Wednesday night at the White House State Dinner for the Republic of China. The brilliant red color is a symbol of luck in Chinese culture, but there was more to her designer choice than just diplomacy.

The male beauty contest judged by women

Male beauty contest dancers

  1. Tall and athletic: Ostrich plumes and pompoms emphasize height
  2. Narrow face: Decorated with red ochre
  3. Wide eyes: Black eyeliner made from charred egret bones
  4. Facial symmetry: Enhanced with black, yellow and white patterns
  5. Aquiline nose: White clay arrow stripe to look more streamlined
  6. Long braids and cowrie shells: Symbolize fertility and wealth
  7. White and regular teeth: Bared and emphasised with black lipstick
  8. Good dancer: Beaded necklaces and bodices jangle against chest in time to the beat
But this beauty contest has a twist - the men dress up, the women pick the winners. What does the Wodaabe people's pageant tell us about male beauty?

Tall, slim, facial symmetry and good teeth - this could be the universal tick list of a beauty pageant judge. And when the contestants are men, their faces painted with red, white and yellow clay, the aesthetic holds true.
These unusual beauty contests, known as Gerewol, celebrate the fertility the rains bring to the parched edge of the Sahara. Filmed for the BBC's Human Planet, Niger's Wodaabe men decorate their faces and dance for hours to impress female judges
And guess what is the winning prize? You will know when you continue!

Until last week, the hope of the Ukahueleigbes was that their daughter, 17-year-old Ella Oyindamola, would soon graduate from the University of Lagos and make them proud by getting a good job. But this hope was dashed last week as she died in a mysterious circumstance.

Jobless Man Jumps Into Lagoon

A jobless man, Sikiru Ogungbadero, 42, has jumped into the Lagos lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge to end his life due to joblessness and frustration, but he was rescued by some fishermen at the scene who brought him out of the lagoon.

After he regained consciousness, he was arrested by policemen from the Yaba Division and charged before the Yaba Magistrate’s Court on a one-count charge of attempting to commit suicide, an offence punishable under Section 327 of the Criminal Code, Cap. C.17, Vol. II, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

Nigeria’s Promise, Africa’s Hope by Chinua Achebe

AFRICA has endured a tortured history of political instability and religious, racial and ethnic strife. In order to understand this bewildering, beautiful continent — and to grasp the complexity that is my home country, Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation — I think it is absolutely important that we examine the story of African people.

FBI Wants 26-Year Old Nigerian Scammer

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has demanded the extradition of a 26-year old Nigerian, Olaniyi Makinde, in connection with e-mail scams currently valued at about USD800,000. A source at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said the FBI is particularly interested in Mr. Makinde, who is currently standing trial in Ondo State, because of the peculiarity of the scam method which involved remotely breaking into the accounts system of an online payroll company in California, Intuit Inc.

IBB Congratulates President Goodluck Jonathan

Gen. Ibrahim Babangida has described President Goodluck Jonathan’s victory at the PDP primary as “not only personal but to all members of our great party, to lovers of peace, unity and progress; and to all those who believe in democracy and Nigeria.”

The retired general, who withdrew from the race for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, advised the president to be magnanimous in victory and carry along with him those who lost at yesterday’s event.

He also said, “My admiration also goes to the woman of substance and courage who never gives up – Mrs Sarah Jibril - who has since 1993 sought at every opportunity to offer her services as president of this country.

“Even though she has not succeeded, history will one day say this is the woman who saw tomorrow when eventually Nigeria elects a woman president.”

Kidnappers free Mr. Ibu’s wife, child

Succor finally came the way of embattled Nollywood star actor, John Okafor, famously known as Mr. Ibu, on Thursday night when kidnappers freed his wife and one-year-old son after nine days in captivity.

While breaking the good news to Saturday Sun, elated Ibu, disclosed that his wife and son were released by their abductors without any harm.

On whether ransom was paid to the kidnappers, who first demanded N50 million, before reducing it to N6 million, some days later, Ibu said that was immaterial.

“What I can happily tell you is that my loving wife and lovely one-year-old son were released to me on Thursday night safe and alive. They are out quite all right, but the condition I met them was very appalling and pathetic. They looked like real prisoners… Asking me whether a ransom was paid at this time is what I cannot answer. But at the appropriate time, I will give you the full details of what transpired. I want to thank you and The Sun for all your efforts.”

Nigeria: The happiest place on earth

The arrivals hall at Murtala Mohammed international airport in Lagos has the kind of humidity that feels like a warm towel. The minute you shake that off, you notice the massive board that proudly welcomes you to Nigeria. Underneath the greeting, written in cheery, cursive script, is the tagline: "The happiest place in the world!"
When I last visited Nigeria, that poster made me laugh like a drain. But now a global survey has confirmed it: in a 53-country Gallup poll, Nigerians were rated at 70 points for optimism. By contrast, Britain scored a deeply pessimistic -44. Why so glum, Britain? And what in the world makes Nigerians so happy?

President Goodluck Jonathan wins PDP primary

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has won ruling party primaries, making him favourite in April's elections. Mr Jonathan's main challenger was ex-Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who was supported by some northern power-brokers.
The president won an overwhelming victory even though some delegates said the party should choose a northerner. Nevertheless, he won 2,736 votes compared to Mr Abubakar's 805. A third candidate, Sarah Jibril gained a single vote.
Correspondents say the margin of his victory was a huge surprise, with several central and northern states backing Mr Jonathan, a southerner.

Is Genevieve Nnaji Pregnant For D'banj?

This is the cover of news of the people magazine published in Lagos Nigeria this week. One of the major stories talked about the story of pregnancy rumour trailing star actress, Genevieve Nnaji.

In recent times, there have been speculations that she was dating D'banj. Personally, I heard this pregnancy tale about two months ago from a close source in the Mohits camp...but did not give it much thought, but for it to surface again, and this time on tabloids, hmnnn....only time will tell, after 9months na!

The kidnappers want 6m, all the money I have is 200,000 - John Okafor

John Okafor and wife, Stella Maris Okafor

"I spoke to the kidnappers at 12pm Jan 7th, they demanded for 6m, but all I have is N200, 000, which I told them. My colleagues have been very sympathetic but none of them have come forward to say I'm supporting you with so, so amount. I don't know whether they are expecting me to come cap in hand to see for their assistance." John Okafor to Azuh Arinze of Encomium mag.

This guy must be joking right? After more than 20 years in the movie industry he only saved about 2000. Well, I just hope he is saying that so the kidnappers can have mercy on him. Please, stakeholders of Nigeria movie industry, friends and colleagues of Mr Ibu should do something and get his young wife out.

Nigeria's top banker wins international recognition

CBN Governor, Mr. Sanusi

Nigeria is frequently cited as one of the most corrupt countries in the world, but its central banker has won two international banking awards.
Mallam Lamido Aminu Sanusi has been named as the Central Bank Governor of 2010 for both the African continent and the entire world, by the prestigious Banker Magazine.
The editor of the magazine, Brian Caplen, says that few candidate names generate an overall consensus on judging panels, and yet, when it came to finding the best global central bank governor of the year, Mr Sanusi was chosen unanimously.

People Opposing Women Abuse ad

This is an experiment conducted in a South African neighborhood by the People Opposing Women Abuse organization to show the common mentality of some of the inhabitants towards domestic abuse.  The experiment consists of a member playing his drums late @ night and being threatened by neighbors and then playing a loud recording of a domestic dispute but not even getting a peep from a window from his neighbors. This video is compelling because it not only shows the nonchalant reaction to abuse in general but also indicates that this is not just a problem in South Africa but the world over.

Man declared innocent after 30 years in prison

 Cornelius Dupree Jr., center, smiles

Texas man declared innocent Tuesday after 30 years in prison had at least two chances to make parole and be set free — if only he would admit he was a sex offender. But Cornelius Dupree Jr. refused to do so, doggedly maintaining his innocence in a 1979 rape and robbery, in the process serving more time for a crime he didn't commit than any other Texas inmate exonerated by DNA evidence.
"Whatever your truth is, you have to stick with it," Dupree, 51, said Tuesday, minutes after a Dallas judge overturned his conviction.
Under Texas compensation laws for the wrongly imprisoned, Dupree is eligible for $80,000 for each year he was behind bars, plus a lifetime annuity. He could receive $2.4 million in a lump sum that is not subject to federal income tax.
