My Top 5 Nigerian Album of the year 2009

No doubt, this year, 2009, had been a beautiful year with many great songs. From the beginning of the year, when Wande Coal and his Mohits crew held the Nigerian music scene to their control, more great albums had been released. From love songs to inspiration songs, the Nigerian music industry has continue to grow with enormous music, videos and exposures. This is my list of 5 greatest albums of the year 2009
1.Mushin 2 mohits - Wande Coal

Even though Mushin 2 Mohits is Wande Coal’s debut album, he is not a stranger on the Nigerian music scene, having enjoyed ridiculous levels of airplay on the various tracks he has featured on from fellow label mate D’Banj. He also featured on several tracks on the Mohits All Stars album C.V. All this combined to make him a household name before his debut Mushin 2 Mohits was released. You’ve got to give it to his management and Mo Hits Records, if nothing else, they know how to create stars. This was definitely one of the most anticipated debut’s in recent times, with perhaps only MI in the same range.

2. NO TIME - BRACKET

The story of this duo would be that of persistence. After a trial debut with Happy day, these acts went back to their drawing board and the result was the Yori Yori album.A 9 track album with support from P-square, J-martins and production by decumzy. This album turned out to be one of the must-buy albums of 2009.The album did make a good impression with its content and igbo like rhythm.

3 . DANGER - PSQUARE

The new P Square album is out and the superfans are nuts (nobody can boast of having more Superfans than P Square -except D’banj). Even the Okoye twins made a song for them called – Superfans. If there is anything I would commend the twins on, it would be their marketing machine. They have improved progressively on the marketing for each album. Improving their appearance (One of the P is sporting a fresh haircut), the album cover is very nice, distribution of their album (album can be picked up on iTunes, Amazon an local outlets near you) and their wallet size. Sadly there has been a minimal improvement in their sound. On Danger, the sound remains largely the same – hardly dangerous now is it. They have stuck to the safe formula that has led to them being one of the most successful acts out of Africa. You have the love songs like I Love You(I wonder how many weddings are going to use this), I Like Dat etc, to send the female and some males crazy – pretty sure there are some guys out there that would be breaking out the Square chat up lines. You have the party songs like Danger, Trowey and Break It which would make djing for Naija parties that much easier for DJs. I can tell you now, nothing like a P Square jam to eject that electric feel into a party. All in all a standard P Square album as expected.
4. C.E.O DA GRIN

Da Grin already is a sick rapper and has Sossick on the boards majority of the time. I would not sleep on this album as that would be like the way most people slept on Gino’s first offering. This is bound to be a killer album. Some artists featured on his album includes Dark Poet Cartier, Isolate Arafada, T-Frizzle, Omawunmi and his producer, Sossick.

5. GINGAH UR SWAGGAH - TERRY G

My first reaction to the announcement that Nigeria’s very own Mr. Every-Hook-I-Sing-Must-Blow was promoting his first post-‘Free Me’ solo project was - how could he be? True the man had basically lived on Lagos radio for more than a year now but Mr. Bling Bling had been living as a tenant and not as a landlord. Even though a couple of songs in the past 18 months wouldn’t have even smelt the pop charts if Terry hadn’t A.) Produced them and/or B.) Sung the hook, the fact still remains that Terry hadn’t had any reasonable personal radio success over the past few months. His only semblance of a solo radio single was that perfect definition of beautiful anarchy, the raging free style ‘Free Madness (Pt 1)’. And then there was also the thoroughly unoriginal ‘Hallelujah’ but unlike his debut album ‘Free Me’, ‘Ginjah Ur Swaggah (Season 1)’ had no hit single, no glossy video, no promo. It seemed like a rushed project from the start, presumably his record label trying to cash in on his sudden popularity. text from strictly9jamusic blog
